Off to Italy for my Tuscan Adventure
October 22nd, 2009
”]Two years in the planning, I’m leaving tonight to fly to Rome (via Munich) for a two-week Italy getaway. Ten of my dearest friends are joining me in a little village called Montisi, which is (happily) in the middle of nowhere. We are ostensibly celebrating my belated 50th birthday, but I also think we’re just celebrating life. Each other’s and the beautiful friends who, sadly, couldn’t be with us this time around.
Hey – there’s always my 55th, right?
After my girlfriend week, I will have a family week. My husband and 2 sons arrive as the girls leave. Plus, some dear college friends of Bruce’s and my folks. Celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary, too. Lots to be grateful for. And I hope this trip slows me down long enough to ponder that.
Slide show of Villa Maddalena, our home away from home for 2 weeks. Photographs by Bill Wright. Yes, THE Bill Wright!
Here’s one more shot of the Villa, taken from a hot air balloon:

We had a similar family vacation in Italy, to Borgo Tre Querce (Three Oaks) near the town of Orvieto. It was an old old stone farmhouse/villa with vineyards and olive trees, a gardener and a most impressive housekeeper. We had this property all to
ourselves as the base for adventures elsewhere in Italy. My husband and I chose to stay mostly there, to soak in depth the peace of this life, which was to me the REAL La Dolce Vita. I learned a great deal about the gardening style of the area, and it refreshed my personal gardening style. I bought lots of terra cotta pots, lots of star jasmine, rosemary, lavender, lemon bushes/trees, climbing roses. Plans for restoring a derelict cement block garage on our property changed as well.
In short, you will have a great deal of fun, you will love the people and the countryside, and the HISTORY…..my word, it is
so mind boggling to walk the streets where the disciples walked in the years of early Christianity. Have fun. Be prepared to
fall in love with Tuscany and Umbria as well.

I wish to clarify something….I CAME HOME and bought the terra cotta pots. Also, you can view some of my photos taken at the villa and gardens in my Vacation in Italy album on Webshots. For instance, did you know that star jasmine will cover a chain link fence in a couple of years and can be sheared like a hedge yet still bloom? And huge urn-like pots beside town doorways in Orvieto contain jasmine which climbs the face of the building to shroud the upper balcony? Perfect !!
